The Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes is run over 1600 metres at Flemington racecourse under weight-for-age conditions. The race is open to horses aged three years and over with $1,000,000 prize money on offer. It is one of the early Group 1 races of the Melbourne Spring Carnival and the 1600m distance attracts quality middle distance gallopers as well as staying horses that are resuming from spells.
The 2022 Makybe Diva Stakes will be run on Saturday 10th September.
Makybe Diva Stakes History
Previously known as the Craiglee Stakes, the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes has a rich history dating back to 1948. Originally run over 2000m the distance of the race was changed back to 1600m in 1965. There have been a host of notable winners in the race including NORTHERLY, MING DYNASTY and LIGHT FINGERS.
Last year’s winner, INCENTIVISE gave trainer Peter Moody his second win in the race and his first Group 1 victory since returning from a training pause. Jockey Brett Prebble rode INCENTIVISE in the race, giving him his biggest win since returning from a lengthy stint as a champion rider in Hong Kong.
Makybe Diva Stakes Form guide
The Makybe Diva Stakes is a tough race for punters with so many horses using the race to kick off their spring campaigns. SOUTHERN SPEED (2012) is the only mare to win the race this century suggesting the girls should be avoided. The Memsie Stakes, run two weeks earlier over 1400m is the best lead-up race for those horses who have already begun their prep.
FIERCE IMPACT (2020) is the only favourite to have won in the last seven years, with Western Australian galloper GATTING winning at odds of $100-1 in 2019! A glance over recent winners in the race suggests that mature horses with great records over 1600m are the ones to beat. They are fit, hardened and ready to fire.
Form analysts need to ascertain which horses will be peaking on race day and which others are building towards something later on. Horses that perform well in the race without winning are capable of winning a big race later on in the Spring. For that reason, the Makybe Diva Stakes is essential viewing for online horse racing fans.
