Are METAL ROOFS HOTTER THINKING THAN SHINGLES
Metal roofs aren’t hotter than dark asphalt or standard materials like slate.
Metal roofs will heat up in direct sun, just as any other roofing material. Because of the reflective nature and color of metal, heat absorption is faster than asphalt, slate, or ceramic shingles, which can retain heat for a longer time.
Additionally, metal roofs can be treated with Energy Star finishes. This combination, with lighter colors, can lead to surface temperatures up 50° cooler than shingles.
Which METAL ROOF COLORS ARE THE COOLEST
When it comes to choosing an efficient color for your metal roof, lighter colors are more reflective. If you live in an area with a lot of direct sunlight and a hotter climate, colors such as beige, pale green, white and beige are great choices.
Additionally, the EPA has an entire list of Energy Star-certified roofing products and information available at https://www.energystar.gov/productfinder/product/certified-roof-products/
WHAT OTHER FACTORS SHOULD YOU CONSIDER IN ORDER TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE COOL?
The heat generated by heat hitting your roof can make your home very hot. This is not just due to the material, color and finish. Insulation and ventilation are important if your metal roof is placed directly over an area that isn’t temperature controlled, such as an attic.
Proper insulation also prevents your metal roof’s noise from deteriorating in heavy rain, hail, or other adverse weather conditions.
A quality metal roof is a better choice than shingles or any other older material because it offers lower cooling costs.
