If you’re a new dog owner, you’re probably losing your mind overhearing what everyone has to say about what they believe is the best type of dog food. Honestly, there’s no right answer for this. It really depends on your dogs and their needs. Depending on the needs of your dogs, canned dog foods may actually prove to be really beneficial for them. And here’s why:
PROTEIN POWER
Canned dog foods typically contain much more protein than regular kibble. This is because their main ingredient is a protein source which is either chicken, beef, or fish. While kibble also has protein as its main ingredient, protein only makes up about 20-40% of most kibbles. However, most canned foods have about 80% or more protein in them. This is great for dogs who are super active and need that extra protein as fuel to keep on going. My own dog is a total goofball and I do try to give him canned food so he continues to be his little energetic self!
SO MUCH VARIETY
Although I haven’t tried kibble myself, I can tell they all probably taste more or less the same, even with different flavors. My dog is super picky and I’ve probably tried every kibble on the planet and he barely touches any of them. With canned dog foods, you can actually tell there is definitely a good amount of flavor. My dog would just salivate all over the floor when all I did was just open the can in front of him. And there’s so much variety to choose from like chicken, beef, and different types of fish.
SAY BYE TO BLOAT
Canned dog foods are perfect for those of you who got dogs that seem to bloat pretty easily. Kibble contains barely any moisture so when it enters the stomach it sucks up all the moisture around it. This is what causes dogs to bloat. Since canned food already contains moisture, it doesn’t really suck up the moisture in their stomach which prevents them from becoming bloated. I once fostered a dog who would always be so bloated and it wasn’t until I made the switch to canned food that I realized what the problem was.
PEAK FRESHNESS
Canned dog foods are usually so much fresher than kibble. When you buy kibble, you get to keep it for up to months on end, feeding it to your dog every day. Imagine eating something that was opened about a month ago. Disgusting right? That’s exactly how dogs feel too. On the other hand, whenever you open a can of dog food, it’s usually consumed by your dog within a day. Canned food also doesn’t contain any preservatives which means there are no chemicals that are being used to keep it staying fresh, unlike kibble. Therefore, if you’re looking for peak freshness, I’d make the switch to canned dog food.
WEIGHT LOSS
This may be hard to believe but canned dog foods actually help promote weight loss. The way this works is that since canned food contains a ton of moisture, it helps make your dog feel full even though they haven’t really consumed much to eat. Since kibble is really dry, your dog has to eat a ton of it before they actually feel full. When I was caring for an obese dog, I actually fed him mainly canned food and this actually helped to significantly drop his weight to normal levels.
